Key dates: campaigning calendar

Get ahead of the game with your planning by using our campaigning calendar. Here you can find out when key actions, moments and themes are taking place and access resources to help you kick-off your campaigns.

12 Feb 2024

2024 is a big year for the environmental justice movement. Here's some key campaigning dates for your diary, for our United for Warm Homes campaign and other campaigns that our network is involved in locally. We’ve included resources to get you started, as well as objectives to help focus your campaigning.

Please note: this calendar isn't exhaustive and we'll be reviewing this information and adding in new "moments" and resources to reflect what's happening in the world. This is so your campaigns can stay reactive and relevant. Watch this space!

Jan – Mar 2024

We kick off the year building on the success of our United for Warm Homes Day of Action and focusing on securing pledge commitments from our MPs and general election candidates so that whoever wins the next general election will deliver rapid and meaningful action to insulate our homes, and put an end to fuel poverty.

In March we’ll be taking action for International Day of Forests to uncover the drivers behind environmental destruction and social injustice around the world.

Combined authority mayoral elections

Campaigning period: now – Jun 2024

If your group operates in a combined authority area, you can participate in this campaign. Metro mayors are the leaders of combined authorities and can have significant powers within a region.

Main objective: engage with metro mayoral candidates. Invite them to face to face meetings, organising hustings and encourage candidates to sign your pledge.

In January focus your efforts on kick-off meetings, campaign planning, community mapping and partnership building. From February you can work towards meeting with candidates, running hustings and winning pledge commitments from mayoral candidates.

From May onwards, the focus will shift to holding winning candidates to account.

United for Warm Homes: winning MP and election candidates support

Campaigning period: Jan 2024 until the general election

Following our successful Day of Action, it's crucial community groups from across England and Wales continue to put pressure on their MPs and general election candidates.

Main objective: win real commitments for Warm Homes. We'd also like to get them to sign up to our Warm Homes pledge.

Campaign resources:

Anti-racism training

Dates: various dates in Mar-Apr 2024

In March and April 2024 we'll be holding in-person anti-racism training.

Main objective: to equip you with the practical and thinking skills around making structural changes essential for fostering anti-racist movements.

What? A day to give you the tools to contribute to a more equitable and united fight for a sustainable future.

Why? To come together to build a movement that represents everyone. Gain skills and feel confident to develop and run environmental justice campaigns with an anti-racism focus.

International Day of Forests

Campaigning period: Mar 2024

International Day of Forests (March 21 2024) is a UN day celebrating forests around the world. Together we can use it to highlight the UK impact on forests globally.

Main objective: push your MP to support a new law on business, human rights and the environment as part of the Planet over Profit campaign.

  • Save the date, link to come soon. Planet over Profit local action group session (Wed 24 Jan, 6.30-7pm)

Local elections: Climate Action Plans

Campaigning period: Mar – May 2024

If you’re campaigning for your council to adopt and deliver an ambitious Climate Action Plan, these elections will be a key moment for you to win real commitments from your future councillors.

Main objective: get candidates to make solid commitments around climate and environmental action.

Apr – Jun 2024

In May, people in several regions across England will head to the polls to vote for their metro mayors. In these areas groups will be working in partnership with others across their region to persuade their mayoral candidates to commit to a Climate Action Plan for their region.

During the summer, we’ll be coming together for our in-person Summer Action Gatherings, to connect with each other and develop our campaigning skills. Refugee Week and Great Big Green Week will also be important moments for us to connect as a movement, build relationships with community partners and amplify the call for international climate justice.

Please note: this section will be updated in 2024. Here's a teaser of what to expect.

Summer action gatherings

Campaigning period: Apr – Jun 2024

A series of one-day events for members of local action groups.

Refugee Week

Campaigning period: Jun 2024

As part of a worldwide network, one way to show international solidarity is to make our home country a welcoming one. That’s why we’re taking part in Refugee Week  in 2024, and we want you to join us.

Main objective: build relationships with and work with community partners, including refugees and people seeking asylum.

Great Big Green Week

Campaigning period: Jun 2024

Dates: 8 – 16th June 2024

The Great Big Green Week is the UK’s biggest ever celebration of community action to tackle climate change and protect nature. Every year, people come together to unleash a wave of support for action to protect the planet.

Campaign resources:

Later in 2024

As we come towards the end of the year, we’ll reflect on what we’ve achieved together as a movement and come together for mobilisations and events around COP29 so that we enter 2025 a stronger, more connected and more inspired movement.

General election

We also know that a general election will be called at some point in 2024, although it's unclear when this will be. Once the date's confirmed, we'll provide your group with training and resources to make climate, nature and social justice a key election issue in your local area.
