Dear [insert name of MP here],

Hand-in of local support for a new law regulating supply chains — request to meet.

I am writing in my capacity as [role] at [Friends of the Earth X] to invite you to meet with us to discuss support for a new UK Business, Human Rights and Environment Act — a law to prevent business abuses of human rights and environmental destruction in their supply chains. We, along with our partners [partner organisation name], would like to meet with you on Friday 5th June [change date if needed] at your offices in [address].

Over the last 12 months we‘ve been meeting with members of the public in [constituency] and growing support for a new law. We have a petition with over [number] signatures and an open letter signed by [number] local businesses and civil society organisations.

We wish to give hand in our petition and open letter [delete as appropriate] to you in person, discuss our campaign, and take some photographs for our social media channels.

Choose the relevant paragraph depending on whether your MP has signed the Good Business Matters pledge or not:

If signed:

We’re delighted that along with 70 other MPs and Peers you have already signed the Good Business Matters pledge in support of a new Business, Human Rights and Environment Act. We would like to use this moment to thank you, and to celebrate your support. We hope this will be something you would also like to share on your own social media and other channels.

If not signed:

On behalf of your constituents, local community groups and businesses, we’re asking you to sign the Good Business Matters pledge in support of a new Business, Human Rights and Environment Act. Over 70 MPs and Peers have already signed, and the need for the law is also supported by businesses, investors, civil society organisations and 150, 000 UK citizens.

Why this is an important moment for the campaign

From deforestation and land grabs to forced labour and poor working conditions, UK companies’ supply chains are linked to serious damage to the environment, communities and workers around the world. The government has acknowledged concerns over such impacts, and the Department for Business and Trade is carrying out a review of Responsible Business Conduct – a key opportunity to bring forward legislation to address these harms. Wider support for the campaign

This campaign is part of the wider movement, coordinated by the Corporate Justice Coalition. There is growing support for a law to address human rights abuses and environmental harms in private and public sector supply chains:

  • Over 70 MPs and Peers have signed the Good Business Matters pledge
  • Businesses and investors:
  • 50 high profile UK businesses, including the John Lewis Partnership, Aviva and Sainsbury’s and Investors with £4.5 trillion in assets under management
  • 49 Civil society organisations
  • YouGov polling shows that 4 in 5 Britons want a new law to end exploitation of workers and environmental destruction in supply chains.
  • petition of almost 145,000 signatures handed to government in June 2025

Please let us know if you will be able to meet with us and receive our petition and community open letter [delete as appropriate] on [date], or suggest an alternative date if preferred.

With best wishes,

[Friends of the Earth X] and [partner organisation]
